As remote work continues to grow globally, Bulgaria has joined the ranks of European countries offering a Digital Nomad Visa to attract location-independent professionals. With affordable living costs, reliable internet, a vibrant expat community, and access to both nature and culture, Bulgaria is becoming a desirable destination for remote workers.

Here’s what you need to know about the Bulgarian Digital Nomad Visa as of July 2025.

What Is the Digital Nomad Visa in Bulgaria?

The Digital Nomad Visa allows non-EU/EEA citizens to live in Bulgaria for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension for up to 12 months, while working remotely for a foreign company, as a representative of a foreign company or as a freelancer. The visa is designed to support professionals whose income comes from outside Bulgaria, ensuring they do not compete with the local labor market.

Eligibility

The several key criteria should be taken into consideration:

  • Citizenship: Third country national

  • Remote work: Must be employed by or contracted with a company outside Bulgaria or representative of a foreign company.

  • Minimum Monthly Income: 50 minimum wages for the previous 2 years (approx. 50x €600)

  • Medical Insurance: Must have valid medical insurance that covers Bulgaria.

  • No Criminal Record: A police clearance certificate is required.

  • Proof of Accommodation: Rental agreement and other documentation confirming where you’ll stay in Bulgaria.

Key Benefits

  • Legal stay for 1 year, extendable to 2 years.

  • Freedom to travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Possibility to apply for tax residency if staying longer than 183 days and meeting the requirements.

  • Coworking spaces, mountains, beaches, fast internet, and rich culture.

Application Process

After the documents are prepared the candidates should apply for type D visa. Once the visa is issued the digital nomad should enter Bulgaria and apply for residency and receive the ID residence permit card.

Can You Bring Family?

Yes, immediate family members (spouse and minor children) may be eligible for family reunification, provided you meet additional financial and housing requirements.

Bulgaria’s Digital Nomad Visa as of July 2025 offers an excellent opportunity for remote workers seeking a legal, affordable, and culturally rich base in Europe. Whether you're freelancing, building a remote startup, or simply working abroad, Bulgaria welcomes you with open arms.
